We read Smoky the Cow Horse and Minn of the Mississippi.
Of course, we had to have one pond date for book club. It is a favorite for all the kids.
Smoky is a mouse-colored horse which is born on the range. After a couple of years, he is taken to the Rocking R Ranch where he is trained by a thirty-year-old cowboy named Clint to be a cowhorse. The cowhorses work during the spring, summer, and fall on the ranch, but are let back out on the range to forage in the winter.
Minn is a snapping turtle born at the headwaters of the Mississippi. In delicate and detailed pencil drawings, Hollings follows the adventures of the turtle down the Great River past Rock Island and St. Louis and Vicksburg for twenty-five years until, fat and content with life, she reaches a cypress swamp below New Orleans.
Sadly, this was our last original group book club meeting. Two families will be moving on and at first, I thought we would end but the other families want to keep going and I do honestly love getting together and reading together. We have invited a family that has been on our wait list for a while and may look to invite more as well. We are taking August off but will start back up in September.
