Book club - Christmas

For book club this month we met at the Goodsell's house. We read two short and beautiful books for the holiday.

Christmas Tapestry and A Certain Small Shepherd.

The Christmas Tapestry is a longer picture book about how a Christian family help a long separated Jewish couple reunite during the Christmas season. Jonathan's father, who is a Baptist preacher, moves to Detroit and has to learn to adjust to a new town.

Millie did such a great job of talking to the kids about the differences in religions and kindness. Very heart felt book club discussion. She also made the connection between the boy who was mute and sometimes sitting with our own feelings and accepting others.

A Certain Small Shephard is about a boy named Jamie, whose mother dies soon after he is born, grows up with his father and two older sisters on their family's rural farm. But though he is physically normal, he is unable to speak when he tries, he only makes grunting noises. This causes him great frustration and some ridicule from other children. He ends up going to a one-room schoolhouse and is cast in the Christmas play as a shepherd. A blizzard forces the cancellation of the play but a poor couple who appear out of the storm herald a different kind of Christmas than any of them had imagined.
